refereed paper membranes & desalination water APRIL 2011 109 The bar charts, Figures 2, 3 and 4, specify the number of applications that were filed in each category, based on the region in which the basic application was filed. It should be noted that applications filed directly with the International Bureau at the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) in Geneva were incorporated into the results for the European region. As can be seen, the total numbers of Australian applications are comparable with applications filed from Europe and greater than the total applications filed from Asia. One point to note is that the per capita filings for the Australian region are higher than that of any of the European, Asian or American regions. This is understandable to the extent that not all foreign applicants want to file in Australia. However, as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, Australian applicants have filed a very low percentage of applications in the categories of: • Membrane modules/systems for water treatment/desalination; and • Different types of membranes and processes for membrane manufacture. It will be noted that the overall number of applications in the membrane modules/systems category is somewhat smaller than in the other categories. Notwithstanding, the number of applications filed by Australian applicants is significantly lower than the number filed by applicants from the US, European and Asian regions. These categories are dominated by applications filed from Asia and the United States. It is important to note that these are two categories focused on membrane technology. More specifically, these categories are focused on membrane product technology. Figure 2: Applications filed from each priority region -- Biological treatment of wastewater.
